Wellness Inspired School Environments Grant Opportunity
Children spend more time in schools than in any other environment away from home. They also can consume up to 50 percent of their total daily calories at school. It is unlikely that childhood obesity rates can be lowered without the help of strong school-based policies and programs to support physical activity and healthy eating.
To support health at our South Carolina schools, the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation launched the Wellness Inspired School Environments (WISE) grant opportunity for public and private, nonprofit schools in South Carolina. For this opportunity, the Foundation is partnering with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG) through its Healthy Schools Program. This program includes a 6 Step Process for continuous improvement that allows schools to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in healthy eating and active living. Based on the results of an evidence-based assessment, each school develops an action plan and has constant access to live and virtual assistance via an online portal.
This opportunity also assists districts and schools in complying with the USDA’s Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 by supporting districts to implement and monitor their district wellness policies. The USDA endorses the AHG online assessment as a best practice for monitoring implementation and measuring the progress of district wellness policies.
Alliance for a Healthier Generation Modules
Grant applications and grant funds must address AHG evidence-based action item(s) in one or more of these six required modules:
School Health and Safety Policies and Environment
Physical Education and Other Physical Activity Programs
Health Promotion for Staff
Family and Community Involvement
Please consider applying or encourage your school to apply and partner with the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation in creating environments to grow the healthiest children possible in South Carolina. Together, we can improve health outcomes for our students and set an example for other partnerships in the United States.
