The SC Free Clinic Association Weathering the Storm

Since the association was created in 2001 and became an independent 501c(3) five years ago, its mission and needs have evolved. In 2008, as the full effect of the recession gripped our state, there was a 50% increase in patient load, a decrease in community giving, and fewer volunteers available to run clinics as people tried to return to paying jobs. The Foundation's network was able to weather the storm. The SCFCA is going strong again, but there are still great needs, with many people who still aren't being served.

The SC Free Clinic Association Looking Forward

The Foundation's latest grant package is multifaceted. SCFCA has launched a project with Presbyterian College's School of Pharmacy to pair students and faculty with clinics for medication administration and counseling. The Association also is creating an in-house certification process, since the clinics are not regulated by any government agency. It's a way to ensure that proper standard and quality control measures are being met across the network of clinics.
