BlueCross Foundation Presents Grant to Anderson Free Clinic’s Honea Path Office - 12/18/2008

Honea Path, S.C. – A grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation to the Anderson Free Clinic will help fund the clinic’s satellite location in Honea Path, officials with the clinic and the Foundation said during a celebration held today in Honea Path.

BlueCross Foundation Executive Director Harvey Galloway presented the $50,000 grant during a luncheon at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Foundation recognizes its grant recipients across the state, which receive funding for such wide-ranging projects as childhood health care, community health care, free medical clinics, mental health, nursing issues, fighting obesity, and health care research.

“The Anderson Free Clinic strives to improve the lives of South Carolinians through its primary care services and other health care programs,” Galloway said. “We are pleased to be able to help the Honea Path satellite clinic with funding to ensure the health and well-being of the citizens of Anderson County.”

Maureen Sartini, executive director of the Anderson Free Clinic, thanked the Foundation for the grant and the volunteers who help run the organization.

“I am so happy to have a place publicly to thank all of our volunteers,” she said. “They are so dedicated. Most all of them already have full-time jobs, and then they come over to help us out.”

State representatives from the area joined other community leaders for Wednesday’s event.

“This grant will help expand our services in Honea Path to those needing medical treatment,” said state Rep. Mike Gambrell. “We are extremely thankful that the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation was able to support this important asset to our community.”

“South Carolinians, no matter if they live in a rural area or lack the proper financial resources, deserve access to care, and the Foundation and the Anderson Free Clinic are making this a reality in Honea Path,” said state Sen. Billy O’Dell. “These efforts are a prime example of people coming together to help those that need it most, and we are proud of what they do for all of us.”

The mission of the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation is to promote the health of South Carolinians and to expand access to health care for the economically disadvantaged by supporting integrated research, education and community service. Since its first award in 2003, the Foundation has awarded more than $22.6 million in grants dedicated to helping those who are most vulnerable to unhealthy conditions.

Headquartered in Columbia, the Foundation is a philanthropic affiliate of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. The Foundation and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina are independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
